Easy Golden Milk recipe for cough and cold| Turmeric milk

Eight years ago, I didn't know what turmeric is. Until I've watched this Thai movie (forgot the title), the lead girl used turmeric to whiten her skin and tried it myself. And guess what it really worked! My skin was so fair then, I'd mix it with lemon and milk and just leave it on for like 15  minutes.

Fast forward to 2018, turmeric isn't just a whitener anymore, it's already a staple in our kitchen. I can't go to bed without drinking it and it really helped me to keep the cough and colds at bay. My husband doesn't like this drink at first, but one time he got the flu and I encourage him to drink it. He absolutely liked the taste and made it a part of his nightly routine. I would prepare this for my 3-year-old son whenever he's got cough and colds and I can definitely say that his healing time is way faster compared before.

But first what is turmeric and why is it so effective?
Turmeric plant comes from the ginger family. Its root is widely used in India as a spice and is now gaining popularity worldwide. Turmeric is effective because of its active ingredient called curcumin. Curcumin gives turmeric its yellow color and has strong anti-inflammatory properties, hence the reason for its effectiveness in managing not just cough and colds but other illnesses as well.

I usually use fresh turmeric roots as I've read somewhere that some turmeric powders are added with extenders which may harm our bodies. If you prefer to use powdered turmeric just make sure it is of high quality. Additionally, it's better to add freshly ground black pepper or consume it with fats such as coconut oil to fully benefit from it, because turmeric alone is poorly absorbed into our bloodstream. One of my favorite drink is a combination of grated turmeric, green tea, coconut oil, and black pepper, tastes really good.

This drink is very easy to prepare and good for the whole family. So here's how I make it.

Ingredients:

- 1 teaspoon of grated fresh turmeric root
- 1 cup of your choice of milk (I used whole milk)
- a pinch or two of freshly ground pepper, or add more if you want it spicy

Note: If I'm making this drink for my son, I'd lessen the turmeric to 1/4 teaspoon and just a pinch of pepper.

Direction:

1. Heat 1 cup of milk in a low heat, don't boil to prevent curdling.
2. Add 1 teaspoon of grated turmeric and pepper. Stir for a few seconds or until the milk turns yellow. Transfer on your favorite mug and enjoy the benefits of your drink.

Disclaimer:
I'm not in any way claiming that I'm a professional knowing all the positive and negative effects of turmeric. I'm just sharing my family's go-to drink whenever we're hit by the flu virus and how it improved our overall health. People who are allergic to ginger is advised not to follow this recipe. Same goes to those people who are on maintenance medicine and those diagnosed to have gallstones. Please consult your Doctor first.
